UpNorthTrips Presents The 10s | MPC: MC x Producer Combo – Common x No I.D. (via @egotripland)
words by @evboogie / mix by @UNITEDCRATES
Welcome to the fourth installment of our MPC (MC x Producer Combo) series. Here we breakdown classic works put together by a specific MC and their producer counterparts. We’ve already taken a closer look at some other dope combos such as: M.O.P. and Primo, Prodigy and Alchemist, and Nas and Salaam Remi. And to celebrate the 20th anniversary of Common’s debut album, Can I Borrow a Dollar?, we thought it would be fitting to take it to The Chi, dig through Com’s catalog, and profile some of the illest joints he’s worked on with his signature producer, No I.D
In today’s pro-tools centric rap world, where studio sessions are emailed back and forth, ANYONE and EVERYONE is a producer. That special relationship between the rapper and their beatsmith, is one that holds less and less weight, making it important to celebrate the great ones. Com and Immenslope (as No I.D. is officially known as) are one of those great ones. Lonnie and Dion, have been successful working partners since day one. and have not only made a name for themselves, but defined a sound for the city they rep. Never defined as a group or a duo, the alchemy of No I.D.’s sound and Com’s rhymes, put the Windy City on the map. Twenty years since their debut release, Com’s nine albums stand up against the discography of any of hip hop’s greats, and No I.D.’s musical knowledge and hustle landed him a gig as Executive VP of Def Jam Records. “Peace to No I.D. and my nigga Y-Not!” [Read More…]

Ibn Inglor - On My Life (prod. G14)

"I usually just go with what my ear wants to hear. I try not to just sample like everybody else does. Using [an unedited] sample is like the laziest thing you can do as a producer, so I go that extra mile. Chop that sample up, put some effects on it and make it sound different. Really listen to the sample and then pace it with the drums. It’s a relieving feeling after it’s done, when you sit back and listen to what you created. I’m just happy if people are as excited about hearing it as I was when I created it."

Ibn Inglor - “Old War” Promo Video.

Chicago website Fake Shore Drive has received a big boost in popularity as Chicago rappers (not only Chief Keef but also artists like King Louie and Lil Durk) gain nationwide attention.  But the site isn’t all about these artists gaining a buzz, the site has been showcasing Midwestern rap for half a decade and is always bringing new artists into the light.  Ibn Inglor, from the far south side of Chicago has just recently been introduced.  The 18-year-old rapper has a new mixtape, “Gawds Speed” coming soon.  Assuming the rest of the project sounds like “Old War” or the other song that leaked, it will definitely be worth a listen.   -J

A fascinating interview with Yung Berg.

No, seriously. This is like the best Beat Construction that isn’t a Beat Construction.

This is essentially A&Ring in the modern era or the only closest successful equivalent.

Beat gives me an “I Get High” vibe.

Chris Mille still holding it down. Expect much from this dude, and from the majority of Chicago.
